#LinkedInChat Follow Up
Last night was our first LinkedIn chat. As one participant, Jeff Crites – @BrickandClick pointed out how ironic it was that we were doing a LinkedIn Chat on Twitter! I suppose we could have done something similar using updates and groups, but this was faster and much more effective! One of the reasons I love twitter!
I also want to thank everyone who participated! You can follow them here. (If I missed you, let me know!)
We are now planning on doing a #LinkedInChat every Tuesday night, and you are invited!
Are you interested in other chats? Check out this great listing from #TwChat
So what is a Tweetchat? Well oneforty says a “TweetChat helps put your blinders on to the Twitter-sphere while you monitor and chat about one topic. TweetChat creates Twitter-based online-chat rooms, based on the hashtags feature (for example, #LinkedInChat) of Twitter. You select a hashtag, and TweetChat creates a virtual “chat-room” that shows you all the tweets that people are posting that include that hashtag in near realtime. Quickly login with your Twitter credentials to join the conversation.
Here’s a quick video to describe how to do a chat:
So what did we learn from the chat?
- Don’t choose the “Yes, share all tweets” button. Only use the #in option – and be wary or retweets
- Open Networker and Strategic Networker alike know that the only way to use LinkedIn effectively is to create real relationships
- One of the ways of creating relationships with folks outside your network is to share a group and send messages that way
- We LOVE the new Share button on LinkedIn (Find it in Tools or Company)
- We Love the “InPerson” applet on the iPhone LinkedIn app
- We wish some other smart phones had it
- Droid might have more apps, but they don’t have a good iPhone app yet
Here’s a digest of some of the tweets (You might want to start at the bottom and work your way up)
BrickandClick @LinkedInExpert I’m kicking myself for not engaging in more hashtag chats like last nite’s #LinkedinChat. Great way to meet/learn/share

CertifiedSM @martinehunter Think I’ve played with a seesmic #driod app. #linkedinchat
SocMediaTulsa: I just checked the android market. There are 2 LI apps. Neither looks like the official. #linkedinchat :: will check

LinkedInExpert @BrickandClick We can always invite people in this group by saying we share a group. @MartineHunter – any group suggestions? #LinkedInChat
@pbarbanes Has anyone else put the awesome LinkedIn “Share” button on their site/blog? #LinkedInChat
pbarbanes You can see – and try – the LI Share button on my blog. Seems to work great! It’s at bottom of post. http://bit.ly/d7vwVX #LinkedInChat
@BrickandClick You can only choose ‘friend’ if you haven’t been IDK’d or “ignored” too often. But I think we should invite! #LinkedInChat
BrickandClick Is it appropriate to invite any on this #linkedinchat to connect on Linkedin? Choose ‘friend’, note this chat in message
LinkedInExpert @BrickandClick I know – we could do the same thing in a groups discussion – but it would take weeks! #LinkedInChat about 16 hours ago via TweetChat in to BrickandClick

@SocMediaTulsa I love it – stalking in real life – bad. Lurking on social media – good! #linkedinchat
CertifiedSM RT @bradysolutions: @linkedinexpert to get a great number of connections start a group & force members to connect with you 1st #linkedinchat
BrickandClick @LisaRangel @treypennington @martinehunter I upgraded to a biz acct with some Inmails. First handful not read. Not deterred! #linkedinchat
martinehunter for LI stat updates: tweetdeck is my fave for laptop, goes direct without the “in” hashtag. seismic for mobile phone. #linkedinchat
BrickandClick @LinkedInExpert I had no idea it existed until I played with the app. LInkedin hasn’t promoted it well. It’s a Bump killer #linkedinchat
LinkedInExpert Has anyone else used the “InPerson” applet on the Iphone LinkedIn app? #LinkedInChat about 16 hours ago via TweetChat
LinkedInExpert @LisaRangel I think recruiters are the exception to many LinkedIn rules – they NEED a paid account – even with a big network! #LinkedInChat
CertifiedSM Which do y’all like better for updating LI and Twitter, etc, Hootsuite or Tweetdeck? #linkedinchat
LisaRangel: yes, I have seen major ROI from LI–got my biggest corp client via LI and many B2C clients #linkedinchat
@LisaRangel Exactly! Running around passing out biz cards, not LISTENING to anyone and expecting people to call????? #LinkedInChat about 16 hours ago via TweetChat in to LisaRangel
treypennington: Recently discovered I was being a bad boy on LinkedIn. Have repented, changed ways http://ow.ly/2eeNx #LinkedInChat
treypennington Haven’t yet found InMails useful. Curious if others have RT @brickandclick Do you use Inmails effectively as an introduction? #linkedinchat
@DP_Turtle: Don’t allow anybody to blatantly sell their service or product. Yes! & now you can “Flag as inappropriate” YAY #LinkedInChat
billymitchell1 I’ve found inmails to be effective way to invite link but if the same group, i just reference that #linkedinchat
LinkedInExpert @CertifiedSM Be interesting – build relationships – If you are no good at that, join www.OpenNetworker.com #LinkedInChat about 16 hours ago via TweetChat in to CertifiedSM
LinkedInExpert @BrickandClick Good question – I have a paid account and still have many of my inmails – I usually go through groups! #LinkedInChat
LinkedInExpert @martinehunter Moderate it
Be active -get in there several times a week. Entice people to share valuable info. Don’t spam! #LinkedInChat
BrickandClick How many use Inmails effectively as an introduction? #linkedinchat
CertifiedSM @LinkedInExpert So what are the best ways to get total strangers to invite you? #LinkedInChat
LinkedInExpert @LisaRangel I might well call you a LIONess! (That’s a compliment -women tend to have smaller networks – which is detrimental) #LinkedInChat
LinkedInExpert @LisaRangel I agree whole-heartedly – becomes very apparent when my clients can’t find connections, and I can in my network #LinkedInChat
LisaRangel Whether it is biz dev or job search leads to source and approach, its similar LI tactics one uses-maximize connections! #linkedinchat
LinkedInExpert @CertifiedSM Also, many people know to only invite others who are already on LinkedIn (Blue ‘In” logo next to their names) #LinkedInChat
LinkedInExpert @CertifiedSM We accept invitations from total strangers! You don’t know who you don’t know – and that might be next client #LinkedInChat
martinehunter @pbarbanes that stategy is almost like an introduction, a handshake. very targeted. will try. great tip. #linkedinchat
KurtScholle RT @LinkedInExpert: DON”T use the “add connections” button and invite EVERYONE on your mailing list. Yikes! (I did that) #LinkedInChat
martinehunter 2 bad about news. could create some noise in group discussions. Will have to turn news into a discussion for activity. #linkedinchat
LisaRangel @pbarbanes I feel for LI to be remotely effective as a search tool, u need min 250-300 connections. #linkedinchat
@CertifiedSM 10%? DON”T use the “add connections” button and invite EVERYONE on your mailing list. Yikes! (I did that) #LinkedInChat
pbarbanes I try to be strategic in a Group: select a question by someone I might want to get to know. Help him/her out, add value (!). #LinkedInChat about 17 hours ago via web
CertifiedSM What % of those 3,000 lifetime invitations usually accept? #linkedinchat
LinkedInExpert @JulieScholle I know, right? Also, be aware you can only SEND 3000 invitations in a life time. Period. Can’t buy ‘em even #LinkedInChat
JulieScholle .@LinkedInExpert So I can invite anyone who is in a LinkedIn group that I am in? That’s easier! #LinkedInChat
pbarbanes A strategy: 1. Join Group, 2. Answer a relevant question in Group, 3. Connect 1-to-1 with the questioner, as follow-up. #LinkedInChat
@JulieScholle If you are truly ready to be a LION, you might try OpenNetworker.com #LinkedInChat
pbarbanes A2 – I accept virtually anyone requesting a connection, but USE LinkedIn strategically. Not a LION (only 100+ connections!) #LinkedInChat
LisaRangel LinkedInExpert Changed my LI status to reflect me seeking specific opportunities and old college friend from big clients reached out #linkedinchat
martinehunter Does anyone use keywords strategically in descriptions for LinkedIn SEO? #linkedinchat
valnelson I agree. RT @LinkedInExpert: @JulieScholle I accept all invitations. We network strategically, but like range of big network #LinkedInChat
CoachCMJ @LinkedInExpert: @shailesh The issue is you are only as visible, LinkedIn is only as usable, as the size of your network. #LinkedInChat
LinkedInExpert @shailesh The issue is that you are only as visible, and LinkedIn is only as usable, as the size of your network. #LinkedInChat
LinkedInExpert @CertifiedSM The politically correct answer is so that more people would communicate – also ability to “flag” abuse #LinkedInChat
LinkedInExpert @CertifiedSM LinkedIn seems to like swallowing up all its options – Inbox did the same thing. I think it’s a mistake. #LinkedInChat
CertifiedSM Got any idea WHY News was folded into Discussion? #linkedinchat
@bradysolutions Yes- the social media cultures are so different! #LinkedInChat
