Recently, Hilda (one of my tribe) asked, "How do you save a search exactly?" I realized I didn't have a very good description anywhere on YouTube or on my blog. However, before we talk about how to save a search, let's talk about why you want to save a search. The reason why is because when you save a search on LinkedIn, LinkedIn will actually send you a weekly, updated list of new people who fall into that particular search algorithm. If you are searching for prospects, LinkedIns Saves Search will send you leads. Whether you're looking for donors for your non-profit, or you're looking for candidates for your business, or you're looking for new clients because you're a consultant or a contractor, you work in sales and marketing, or you're looking for... I'm always getting asked that question! And the answer is.. it depends! True Story: LinkedIn really pissed me off back in November (happy to tell you the whole story privately sometime.) I decided to "show them" and I canceled my Premium account. Because my $60 investment was really going to make or break LinkedIn :) I lasted about 2 weeks on free until I had to upgrade again. But that's me. Obviously, I use LinkedIn a lot. But how about you? Should you upgrade? What I tell my clients is, "Use LinkedIn's free offer until you hit the wall." When you can't do what you want to do on LinkedIn, invest in an upgrade. (Personally, I prefer Business Plus over Sales Nav.) If you have been wondering if LinkedIn Premium is for you, read the article below that I wrote for the... Read More

A Good Thing or a Bad Thing? Holy Moly! This is what I woke up to this morning: Microsoft and LinkedIn Corporation on Monday announced they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire LinkedIn. At $196 a share That should help LinkedIns stock! (A little like Oprah investing in Weight Watchers!) Grand total? A little over 26 BILLION! (Yes, thats a B!) That works out to about $60 a user/ Not a bad CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) if you think about it for Microsoft! And if we are talking CLV (Customer Lifetime Value) it could be a very good deal indeed! Included in the price Lynda and Slideshare. According to Microsoft, "things" should take effect by end of year.... But just what are those things? Of course, I am hoping LinkedIn reverts back to the... Read More

As one of my connections pointed out, even LinkedIn Experts can make a mistake! This one happened to work out! I always recommend my clients turn off their profile update notifications when they work on their profiles. You dont want to flood your network with every little change you make! In fact, I was showing a client how to do that on my profile, and then accidentally left notifications ON. A few hours later, I decided to add one of my new ventures, SocialSalesGPS to my profile under Experience. And the chaos ensued! 668 Congratulations later, I finally had to put my amazing assistant on managing my exploding inbox! But heres the thing Thats 668 opportunities to engage with my network! The views on my profile doubled The clicks to... Read More

Your professional headline, the area just underneath your name, is a short (120 character) description of who you are and what you do. Most people will just have their title at company, but they dont actually take the time to describe who they are and what they do. The 120 character limit is not a lot, it is about the length of a sentence; however, it is far better than just writing your title and company, especially if your company name doesnt fully describe what your company does. So, use the professional headline. It is a great place to put a tagline and, if they fit, use some of your most important key words. The other thing to know about your professional headline is that most of your communication on LinkedIn, whether you are responding to a group message or sending a message or... Read More

LinkedIn is similar to Google in that if you have the right keywords in the right places you are much more likely to be found in a search. It is actually easier than Google. Many may already know what their keywords are, but on LinkedIn make sure to keep it simple! When people are looking for you, or someone like you, they may be looking for a social media strategist or a social media marketer. They may be looking for an accountant, but they are not going to search forensics wizard. The simpler and straight-forward your keywords are, the more easily people will be able to find you. That is the goal after all. Where do you look if you dont know what key words to use? Great question. One of the best places to find keywords is actually on the profiles of other LinkedIn users in your... Read More
