A Good Thing or a Bad Thing? Holy Moly! This is what I woke up to this morning: Microsoft and LinkedIn Corporation on Monday announced they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire LinkedIn. At $196 a share That should help LinkedIns stock! (A little like Oprah investing in Weight Watchers!) Grand total? A little over 26 BILLION! (Yes, thats a B!) That works out to about $60 a user/ Not a bad CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) if you think about it for Microsoft! And if we are talking CLV (Customer Lifetime Value) it could be a very good deal indeed! Included in the price Lynda and Slideshare. According to Microsoft, "things" should take effect by end of year.... But just what are those things? Of course, I am hoping LinkedIn reverts back to the... Read More

As one of my connections pointed out, even LinkedIn Experts can make a mistake! This one happened to work out! I always recommend my clients turn off their profile update notifications when they work on their profiles. You dont want to flood your network with every little change you make! In fact, I was showing a client how to do that on my profile, and then accidentally left notifications ON. A few hours later, I decided to add one of my new ventures, SocialSalesGPS to my profile under Experience. And the chaos ensued! 668 Congratulations later, I finally had to put my amazing assistant on managing my exploding inbox! But heres the thing Thats 668 opportunities to engage with my network! The views on my profile doubled The clicks to... Read More

A Quick Tour Video: I wanted to give you a quick tour of LinkedIn's new mobile app . It is FINALLY available for both the iPhone and for the Android . (This demo is on the iPhone.) Home Screen First of all, the home screen is going to show your highlights: - the best updates from the people that you follow. You can like, comment and share right from your home screen. I think this is going to actually increase usability and engagement on LinkedIn! Also, you can create an update or even share a photo from this screen. (Love that you can share photos EASILY from your phone without using Airdrop or Dropbox or Evernote!) Before I always had to forward photos I'd taken from my phone onto LinkedIn in order to share them. Now I can just simply share a photo or take a photo.... Read More

So Thought you might want to look at the new LinkedIn user interface. And yes, I'm going to give you my honest opinions of it. For instance, I think it looks a little bit juvenile. I preferred the old user interface, but they didn't ask me. As far as functionality, everything is pretty much the same except for Groups. In fact, my feeling is that this new user interface overhaul was designed to align with the new looks of Groups, as well as the new LinkedIn Groups App and New LinkedIn Mobile App. Other than the new blue bar up top, everything seems to be right now as it was. When you go to your homepage, everything that you're used to seeing is still there. You can view your recent activity, see who's viewed your profile, who's viewed your posts. Your share an update , ... Read More

The NEW LinkedIn Groups the application is now available for your Apple device and I actually really, really like it. (Changes to Groups on LinkedIn rolling out soon!) Go to iTunes, click on Apps and Search for LinkedIn Groups. It is NOT the first app to show up. You will recognize it because it looks a lot like the Connected app. Check out this video to see LinkedInGroups in action! Once it is downloaded and opened it, the app is going to ask you if you want to sign in as yourself (if you already have a LinkedIn mobile app.) If you don't, then you'll probably just have to sign into LinkedIn. Either way, you only have to do it once, and then the LinkedIn Groups app will take you to the home screen where you can see what's happening. The Highlights page is pretty much... Read More

Heres the skinny on LinkedIn Lookup LinkedIn says its the fastest way to find, learn about, and contact anyone at your company, even if youre not connected to them on LinkedIn. According to LinkedIn, Lookup helps you to: Search quickly - Looking for someone (IN YOUR OWN COMPANY) with a specific skill set or job responsibility? Search by name, experience, job function, title, or expertise. Its that easy. Discover easily - Meeting someone new at work? Learn more about them, and find common ground by simply viewing their profile. Contact instantly - Get in touch with your coworkers through email, phone, or chat in one handy place. No need for multiple contact lists. So I guess that is kinda cool if you work for a mid to large sized company that doesnt already... Read More

I often get this question with people new to LinkedIn, or with small networks. The reason LinkedIn wont let you send an invite is usually one of three things (and really the last one is usually the case.) 1 - Either you have exceeded your invites (3000) in which case just go to LinkedIn's helps section to ask for more. (See video on how to do that here: https://youtu.be/YPcJFZN1Mt4 ) 2 - Too many people have IDK'd you (said they don't know you) and LinkedIn has limited you. Again, beg LinkedIns forgiveness via their help section. 3 - These connections are outside your network (you don't share a group and are not friends of friends). In which case start proactively joining some groups they are in. Hope that helps! Viv ... Read More

If youve ever wondered how I became a LinkedIn expert and industry thought leader, heres your chance to find out. Not long ago, I was interviewed by Jamie Turner (who many of you may know as the 60 Second Marketer ) about my work as a social media expert and how I got here. We covered a lot of ground in the interview and I shared a ton of information that many of you might not know. (For example, did you know Ive written manuscripts for three science fiction novels? Yup. Its true.) Here are just some of the other things I discussed in my interview on The Jamie Turner Show : My Name : I have a pretty unusual name. And with a name like mine, I felt I was either destined to be an author or a stripper. (Thank God I wrote a book!) My Early Career : At one point in my... Read More
