Business Is Like A Rubik’s Cube by Howard Lewinter

Being in business is more than just a job.

It’s a way of life.

It’s a way of thinking.

To be successful in business requires commitment. Depending on what type of business you’re in, business can always be on your mind. Even though you may enjoy doing other things, business is your focus.

It’s just what you do.

Whatever your role in business may be, in many ways, it’s your gift to the world because it helps others to be more successful and happier in their own lives.

Do you remember the Rubik’s Cube?

The Rubik’s Cube was introduced in 1974. As per Wikipedia, it is a 3-D combination puzzle. Over 350 million have been sold throughout the years awarding the Rubik’s Cube the distinction of being the most sold puzzle ever – and possibly the most sold toy ever.

The cube itself is composed of different colors. As the cube is twisted the goal is to align all the colors. For many this can be frustrating to almost impossible to do. Yet others just look at the cube and can visualize how to twist and turn it to successfully line up the colors.

I once had a conversation with a business owner who told me a story about an ice machine. The ice machine was broken. The repair company said it would be impossible to fix. A customer happened to hear about the assessment of the ice machine. Being a millwright at a local steel mill he was use to fixing things. So he asked if he could take the ice machine, put it in the back of his pick-up truck, take it home and see if he could find a way to repair it. It was agreed he could take home the ice machine. The next day, living up to his word, the millwright returned with the ice machine and declared it fixed and ready to use. When asked what was wrong with the ice machine, the reply was that some of the ball bearings needed replaced. The cost to replace: $1.50 back in those days. The millwright took the time to look at the problem and think through exactly how the ice machine operated. No different than those successful in putting together the puzzle of the Rubik’s Cube.

It’s also no different with business.

The key is knowing and understanding how to put everything together every business day for success – just like a Rubik’s Cube!

You can’t just throw up a website or expect a scant, never updated LinkedIn profile (that’s why you need to follow expert advice from Viveka von Rosen, the @LinkedInExpert) to bring business and success your way.

Business success means being able to twist, turn, to always think through and be flexible with what comes next in your business day just like with a Rubik’s Cube. Be able to strategically handle everything so it all connects and lines up for you, your co-workers and customers. It’s about getting things done and having everything fall into place. To do more than is expected.

Remember: If one little thing doesn’t line up right in your business day, it’s no different than with the Rubik’s Cube. It won’t work out perhaps as you expected or would like it to.

Every day we play the reality game of business. Why do we do it? It’s the excitement of winning at the game. Yes, it’s about making money. But it’s really about showing the world what you can do; what you can accomplish; how you can make business and the world better.

So let’s think of business as a game. As a Rubik’s Cube you need to put together every day. If you find something isn’t lining up right in your day. Stop for a moment or a few minutes and take another look at whatever it is to make sure that it happens and you, your co-workers and customers succeed.

To your success!
