It Is Who You Know - So Who Do You Know?

Time for you to do more homework!

Research companies on LinkedIn that you would be interested working for. Just click on the search and drop down to "Companies" and type in the Company name.

From the Company page you can see who you might know at the company you want to work for, and after you perfect your profile (see LinkedIn for Jobseekers: Part Two to make sure you the best most professional profile possible), work on actively building your relationships with some of the people who work there. You might even know a few already!  (When I am prospecting a company to work with, I am often surprised that I already know some folks there who can help me land the gig!)

Don’t worry if the people you know are not the HR or hiring manager type… If you know, or can be introduced to ANYONE in a company you are prospecting, then it’s a good thing. They can give you great insider information like what the company culture is like, who you really need ot convince to get the job, etc.

Who knows – you might already be connected to someone in the company you want work with – and didn't even know it! LinkedIn will actually tell you who in your network works at the company you are interested in, and what level of connection they are to you. The first level connection you can send a message to, a second-level connection you can get introduced to, the third level connection you might join a group and connect with them through that group.  Here's a video on how to easily invite ANYONE to connect on LinkedIn!

Company Pages will also do things like- well - list jobs!  So you definitely want to follow and keep abreast of what your target Companies are listing.

Its also a good idea to check out their updates, and see if you can mine some insider information and company culture from those links.  And since you are there, why not like, comment on and share a few updates?  It can't hurt and might even build top of mind awareness witht he company employees you want checking YOU out!

There are many other steps you can take – but just following the few things I've outlined in this post and Job Seekers: Part One and Job Seekers: Part Two will set you far and above most other job seekers out there!
